Handyman vs. general contractor: what are you paying for?

Match the service to the work

For a defined repair list or a cosmetic refresh, hiring a handyman directly may offer better value because the project may not need broader construction coordination. A general contractor can add value when a renovation involves multiple regulated trades, structural work or complex sequencing. The best choice depends on the work, not simply the job title.

Understand how the quote is built

Handyman work may be priced by the task, by the hour or as a fixed project. Minimum visits, preparation, materials and cleanup can affect the total. General contractors may use a fixed price or a cost-plus arrangement covering project costs and an agreed fee. Their price may include coordination, supervision and administration. Ask what is included rather than assuming one pricing method is cheaper.

Compare the same project, line by line

Imagine repainting a bedroom, replacing its baseboards and adjusting cabinet hardware. Give both providers the same measurements, preparation requirements, paint specification, material responsibility and cleanup expectations. Compare the complete price, timing and exclusions. For this kind of cosmetic scope, a direct handyman proposal may avoid coordination you do not need, but savings are not guaranteed.

Get a project-specific estimate

Online price ranges are not a quote for your home. Access, surface condition, material quality and the finish you expect can change the cost. Stelini provides a written estimate based on the actual work. We do not publish an automatic discount against general contractors or promise that a handyman is always the lowest-cost option.
